Introduction to Hand Coloring Photographs

Introducing the new DSI Digital Silver Matte Fiber Print ®

Do you remember Hand Colored photographs?

Before color photography was invented, painters and photographers would apply color to their photographs usually by using oil paints. After my Hand Coloring Black & White Photography was released in 1999 by Quarry Press, people came out of the woodwork to share stories about family members who hand-colored photographs. Almost every photo session and wedding I photographed I would hand color at least one image. It really created timeless art. Most of the images I hand colored were with infrared film or digital infrared and then hand colored using Prisma Color Pencils.
I decided in our new book Infrared Photography; Artistic Techniques for Brilliant Images, co-authored by Kyle Klein, to include a chapter on Hand Coloring. I am hoping it will inspire and no longer be a lost art.
